mp5013 e C 5 v, 2 a , programmable current - limit switch mp5013 e rev. 1.0 www.monolithicpower.com 9 9/26/2016 mps proprietary information. patent protected. unauthorized photocopy and duplication prohibited. ? 2016 mps. al l rights reserved. operat ion the MP5013E limit s the inrush current to the load when a circuit card connects to a live backplane power source, thereby limiting the backplane s voltage drop and the d v/ d t of the voltage to the load. the MP5013E offers an integrated solut ion to monitor the input voltage, output voltage, output current , and die temperature while eliminat ing the external current - sense power resistor, power mosfet , and thermal sens or . under - voltage lockout (uvlo) operation if the supply (input) is below the under - voltage lockout ( uvlo ) threshold, the output is disabled, and the e nable /f ault line is driven low. when the supply rises above the uvlo threshold, the output is enabled , and e nable /f ault is pulled high through a 2 5 a current source without an external pull - up resistor . the pull - up voltage is limited to 4.9 5 v . output over - voltage protection (ovp) if the input voltage exceeds the over - voltage protection ( ovp ) threshold, the output is clamped at 5.7 v , typ ically . c urrent limit ing when the chip is active, if the load reaches the over - current protection (ocp) threshold (trip current) or a short is present, the MP5013E switches to constant - current mode (hold current) . the MP5013E shut s down only if the over - c urrent condition trigger s thermal protection. however, when the MP5013E is powered up by v cc or enable ( e n ) , the load current should be smaller than the hold current . otherwise, the part cannot be fully turned on . in a typical applic ation with a 22 ? current - limit ing resistor , the trip current is 6. 5a , and the hold current is 3.5 a . if the MP5013E is in normal operati on and pass es 2.0a , it only need s to dissipate 1 44 mw with a lo w 36 m? on resistance . for a package dissipation of 100 c/w , the temperature rise is + 14 c. given a 25c ambient temperature , the typical package temperature is 39 c. the MP5013E requires a heat sink during constant - current mode ( i.e.: from a short circuit) to prevent an unwanted shutdown . during a short - circuit condition , the MP5013E must dissipate the power from a 5 v drop . without additional heat dissipation at 100 c/ w , the temperature exceed s the thermal threshold (+175c) , and the MP5013E shut s down to force the temperature to drop . thermal protection if the temperature exceeds the thermal threshold , the MP5013E disables its output and dri ves the e nable /f ault line to mid dle ( mid ) level ( see the following enable/fault section for more detail ) . the thermal fault condition is latched, and the MP5013E remain s in a latch ed - off state until the power is restart ed or enable/fault is reset . enable /fault enable/fault is a bi directional, three - level i/o pin with a weak pull - up current ( typically 2 5 a ) . the three levels are low , mid , and high . the enable/fault functions enable or disable the MP5013E and relay fault information. when enable /fault functions as an input , l ow and m id levels disable the MP5013E . a l ow level can also clear the fault flag. a high level enables the MP5013E if the fault flag is clear . when enable /fault functions as an output , t he pull - up current allow s a wired - nor pull - up to enable the MP5013E if the current is not overridden . an under - voltage condition cause s a low level on enable/fault and clear s the fault flag. a thermal fault set s a mid level on enable/fault and set s the fault flag .
